John P. McAuliffe (1921-2017)

Founding Partner

John McAuliffe (1921-2017) co-founded Wiedner & McAuliffe in 1973, launching a two attorney workers’ compensation defense firm. Under his and Frank Wiedner’s guidance, the firm grew tremendously and today has more than 70 attorneys practicing throughout the Midwest. Prior to founding the firm, John worked for several casualty insurance companies. A highly respected attorney, he was known for being extremely prepared. John’s legal acumen also included a deep knowledge of the human body and its relation to medicine, something opposing counsel learned during depositions with the veteran attorney. Described by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin as “a giant in the workers’ compensation defense bar,” John also devoted a significant amount of time to mentoring and teaching the younger attorneys in the firm.  His respect for the practice of law is woven into the fabric of the firm and the firm’s culture.
