Summary
Thomas is a member of the Civil Litigation Practice in Wiedner & McAuliffe’s Chicago Office. With nearly two decades of defense litigation experience, Thomas has a wide-ranging practice that encompasses premises and motor vehicle liability, insurance liability, and third-party actions. He also provides counsel on employer’s liability and civil litigation involving general tort, product, construction and slip-and-fall premises liability. Thomas has served as defense counsel in several major Illinois cases involving premises liability and workers’ compensation issues.
Thomas graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts. He earned his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in 1984.
Before joining Wiedner & McAuliffe, Thomas was associated with three Chicago area law firms: Alfieri, Abbene, Durkin and Daley, Doyle and Ryna, and Pollina and Phelan.

Notable Cases

Smithers v. Center Point Properties, 318 Ill. App. 3d 430, 741 N.E.2d 1152 (1st Dist. 2000): Thomas successfully secured affirmation by the Appellate Court of Illinois of the “fireman’s rule,” which dictates that property owners are not liable for injuries sustained by firefighters in the act of duty.

Esposito v. Dior Builders, 274 Ill. App. 3d 338, 653 N.E.2d 921 (1st Dist. 1995): Thomas’s defense secured summary judgment for his client when the Appellate Court of Illinois affirmed the Circuit Court’s ruling in a case brought by a construction worker alleging violation of the Structural Work Act and negligence.
